Emi Martinez, the goalkeeper for Argentina, cruelly mocked Kylian Mbappe by requesting a “minute of quiet” for him during the changing room festivities.
Mbappe excelled for France against Argentina, becoming just the second player in World Cup final history to score a hat-trick.
Nonetheless, all was in vain, as Martinez guided the South Americans to a penalty shootout victory following a dramatic 3-3 tie.
As a result of Mbappe’s contentious remarks in May, tensions between the Frenchman and the Argentinians were already high.
Mbappe has previously said, “South American clubs have disadvantages since they do not face the same level of competition as European teams.”
“Argentina and Brazil do not compete at a high level in order to qualify for the World Cup. In America, football is not as sophisticated as in Europe. Such was the case in previous World Cups.”
Emi Martinez was queried about his remarks before the championship game, and the Argentinian players seemed to have considered them.
Emi Martinez stated of Mbappe, “He lacks enough football knowledge.”
He has never performed in South America. When you lack this experience, it may be preferable not to discuss it. But it doesn’t matter. As a terrific squad, we are acknowledged as such.”
