Robert Lewandowski believes that Lionel Messi’s World Cup victory with Argentina in 2022 has made him the favorite for the next Ballon d’Or.
In his last World Cup campaign, Messi led Argentina to victory in Qatar, scoring twice in the championship game before his team defeated Kylian Mbappe and France on penalties.
Messi was not nominated for the 2022 award, which Karim Benzema won. Although the next ceremony wouldn’t take place for more than a year, Lewandowski said that Messi had become the favorite for the next golden ball after winning the World Cup.
Robert Lewandowski said: “There may be one more player who plays for the same club, but there is only one World Cup that determines this season’s champion, and Leo is currently in the lead because of what he has accomplished, which means everything to him. He can now appreciate it.”
Messi has been linked to a possible comeback to Barcelona. Lewandowski has made an outstanding start to his career in Catalonia and acknowledges that Messi’s return would be an unbelievable possibility.
“It is not my decision. In contrast to previous eras, he is now the kind of player that any striker would like to play with.”
“allfootballleaue” recognizes PSG is confident Messi will sign a new deal and remain in France. However, the Argentine striker is not seeking to commit for longer than 18 months. Inter Miami of Major League Soccer wants Messi to join them in Florida, but he is expected to remain in Europe for the next two seasons.
