Southampton vs. Manchester City: Southampton stunned reigning Premier League winners Manchester City to advance to the Carabao Cup semifinals for the second time in 35 years.
The Saints reached the final in 2017, but few considered them a chance to advance against City, considering their dismal league performance this season.
Pep Guardiola’s decision to rotate his team ultimately backfired. Even at halftime, the City manager made many substitutions, including the entrance of Erling Haaland, but to no effect.
Saints center-back Duje Caleta-goal-bound Car’s shot was the opening opportunity for Southampton, which was thwarted by a goalie save by Stefan Ortega. It was a warning sign, and the crucial first-half double came shortly afterward.
After Lyanco won and crossed the ball into the area, Sekou Mara scored his first goal for the club with a magnificent, accurate finish. Moments later, Moussa Djenepo doubled the lead when he drove infield and curled a shot over Ortega’s head, sending St. Mary’s into a state of delirium.
Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne were among the City stars who came on at halftime, but the hosts could withstand the pressure without giving up many opportunities. Late in the game, Julian Alvarez had a chance, but goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was equal to the challenge.
