When France learned that forward Christopher Nkunku would not be able to participate in the World Cup due to injury, it was a major setback.
The star of RB Leipzig, who has been connected to a January transfer to Chelsea, joined Didier Deschamps’ side in advance of the competition.
In a fight with Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga at Les Blues’ Clairefontaine training facility, however, he came out on the losing end. He was initially optimistic that the injury was not serious, but further tests confirmed his worst fears, and he will not be able to participate in France’s defense of the World Cup.
“According to the French FA, Christopher Nkunku suffered an injury during training and will not be able to play in the World Cup.
Everyone feels bad for Christopher and hopes he gets well soon.”
Chelsea will be waiting anxiously as further information emerges, although at this point they don’t know how severe the injury is. They have been looking on the 25-year-old to revitalize their sputtering assault since early January.
Despite claims that a medical exam had already been performed as part of the bargain, it is now unclear whether or not such an arrangement is possible.
Nkunku has been on fire for Leipzig this season, scoring 12 goals in the Bundesliga.
Randal Kolo Muani, a striker for Eintracht Frankfurt, has reportedly been tapped to replace Nkunku on France’s World Cup roster, as reported by RMC Sport.
