FIFA President Gianni Infantino wants the World Cup to be held every three years in the future and the event to be held in the winter again.
The 2022 World Cup was unlike any other, with the heat of Qatar’s summer forcing the tournament to be held in winter, right in the thick of the European club season.
There were fears that players would be exhausted and prone to injuries, lowering the level of football during the event, but that was not the case, with many fascinating matches taking place and some of the sport’s greatest stars performing well.
According to the Daily Mail, this, together with the fact that record earnings were made, has persuaded Infantino that World Cups should be hosted at this time of year again in the future.
That isn’t the only change the FIFA president wants to make; according to the article, Infantino wants the event to be held every three years rather than every four.
It’s not the first time such a concept has been floated, with the governing body suggesting a World Cup every two years, causing friction with UEFA and CONMEBOL.
The European and South American organizations will also resist the new proposals. However, Infantino won’t be able to implement them anytime soon, with the next World Cup set to take place in the summer of 2026 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
That tournament, though, will include 48 teams for the first time and a new structure yet to be determined.
