Lionel Scaloni, the head coach of Argentina, is happy with his team’s perseverance in the World Cup final victory against France.
La Albiceleste maintained a 2-0 lead against the 2018 winners, but extra time was required due to a brace from Kylian Mbappe. And just as Lionel Messi made it 3-2 in the 108th minute, Mbappe scored again in the last minute to send the game to penalties.
However, Argentina eventually triumphed, defeating their opponents 4-2 in a shootout to win their third World Cup and first in 36 years.
After the historic victory, a heartbroken Scaloni told reporters, “I cannot believe we have endured so much in a perfect game. Incredibly, this group reacts to everything.
“I am pleased with their job. It’s an intriguing bunch,’ he said. ‘The blows we’ve suffered today, the ties, make you emotional. This is a momentous day for our nation, so please enjoy it.”
Lionel Scaloni, 44, was moved from his post as manager of Argentina’s under-20 team to the national team’s helm in 2018.
Capped seven times in his playing days, Scaloni’s coaching career hadn’t set the globe alight before assuming the post. All that changed when he guided the team to the 2021 Copa America title and a 36-game undefeated streak leading up to the 2022 World Cup.
