Luis Campos says that the reason Paris Saint-Germain didn’t sign Ousmane Dembele is because he doesn’t fit into the way they play football.
Dembele’s future at Barcelona was very uncertain going into the summer transfer window because his contract with the Catalan giants was about to end, but he ended up signing a new contract until 2024 and staying put.
Before he signed the new contract, he was linked to a number of clubs, but none more than French champions PSG. Campos, who works as PSG’s Football Advisor, has now said that the team didn’t sign the player because of the system that Christophe Galtier, the club’s new manager, has put in place.
Fabrizio Romano quotes Campos as saying, “We didn’t sign Dembélé because he’s a winger and we play a different way.” He also said, “I love Dembélé, I think he’s great, but we had other plans.”
Neymar and Lionel Messi play in the middle behind Kylian Mbappe, and wing-backs play on either side of them. Dembele works best in wide areas, so the club didn’t sign him. Instead, they tried to make transfers that fit the new manager’s ideas.
So far this season, this choice has worked out well for everyone involved. Lionel Messi has done well in the new system and has helped PSG win all but one of their games so far this season.
The Argentine has already scored four goals and set up nine goals in all competitions. In only three games has he not scored or set up a goal. Xavi has led Barcelona to six wins out of eight games.
Robert Lewandowski has been their best player, but Dembele has also done well. He has scored two goals and set up four more, and he is often the most dangerous player on the team.
