The Polish official Szymon Marciniak will officiate the 2022 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and France.
Szymon Marciniak is the first native of Poland to receive this honor, and he will be joined by fellow Poles Pawel Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz.
He officiated four group stage games and two in the last 16 of the 2021/22 Champions League before overseeing Chelsea’s 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in the quarter-final and Liverpool’s victory over Villarreal in the semi-final – the first time a Polish official had overseen a major European semi-final.
Marciniak has overseen two games this winter and, by coincidence, has already officiated France and Argentina.
In the group stage, he blew the whistle as France defeated Denmark 2-1, issuing three yellow cards as Kylian Mbappe’s late strike clinched the victory for Les Bleus.
After that, Marciniak coached Argentina to a 2-1 victory against Australia in the round of 16.
