Twitter: Portugal cemented their position as one of the major contenders for the World Cup on Tuesday, defeating Switzerland 6-1 in the last 16.
And, perhaps most importantly, they did so after benching Cristiano Ronaldo. If you want to relieve that craziness, go here and scroll down.
But we’ll concentrate on what occurred during and after the game. Ronaldo’s substitute, 21-year-old Goncalo Ramos, scored at Yann Sommer’s near post to start the game and the comedy.
Pepe became the oldest World Cup knockout stage scorer in history with a bullet header from Bruno Fernandes’ corner.
Shortly after the interval, Ramos scored his second goal of the night with a tap-in at the near post, while Raphael Guerreiro capped off a superb counter with a powerful finish into the roof of the net.
Switzerland managed to pull one back through Manuel Akanji, before Ramos bagged his hat-trick with a delectable dink over Sommer.
There was still time for Portugal to score the sixth goal, with Rafael Leao rounding off the scoring.
