The failing European Super League’s creators, A22 Sports Management, will meet with UEFA on Tuesday.
In April 2021, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Juventus, Inter, AC Milan, and Atletico Madrid proposed starting a closed-door rival league to UEFA’s Champions League. This plan later evolved into the European Super League.
However, the plans were quickly derailed by an outcry from fans throughout the world, and the vast majority of clubs quickly backed away from the proposal and apologized for their involvement in the attempted coup.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus are still in a court struggle waiting for a verdict on the doomed plan, with all three clubs maintaining that UEFA’s supervision of European football is not fit for purpose.
Meanwhile, The Athletic says that A22’s newly recruited CEO Bernd Reichart will meet with UEFA on Tuesday after he requested fresh talks with the organization last month.
Reichart is still dedicated to restarting the European Super League, and he recently told PA that the new season may begin in 2024/25 “That may be the first practical and sensible prediction, but there are too many unknowns for me to be confident in making it. That’s the first sensible guess at this point.”
He also told the Financial Times, “We want to see whether there is greater unanimity on the problems facing European football.” Free from restrictions, we must discuss how to improve the future of the game we all love by making significant changes.
