Trying to explain Liverpool‘s dismal start to the 2022–23 season, Virgil van Dijk has pointed to one major factor for the team’s difficulties.
The Reds have gotten off to a sluggish start this season after winning both domestic cups and coming so close to completing a historic quadruple last year.
With seven points separating them from a top-four Premier League berth and a quarterfinal matchup against Real Madrid in the Champions League, Jurgen Klopp’s team enters the holiday break in sixth place.
Van Dijk has acknowledged that Liverpool’s season has been “weird” thus far, but has blamed the team’s struggles on the team’s unique schedule owing to the winter World Cup.
The previous several months, to put it mildly, have been rather unusual. Looking around at other teams, we aren’t the only ones striving to achieve consistency; it’s tough. They haven’t been able to pinpoint it,” he stated.
The World Cup and the next break play a significant role, as do the possibility of player injury and lack of fitness. Everyone found it challenging, and it was unusual, but I can only speak for us because we’re in the thick of it.
It was encouraging to see some consistency in the team’s performance in the previous few games. After a holiday season, it’s only natural that many gamers will continue to put in time at the office over the vacation. It felt great to score 22 points.
Van Dijk is about to join the Dutch national team for the first time in preparation for an upcoming competition.
